From its very inception, the Guus Hiddink Foundation has focused on helping children from impoverished backgrounds who have cancer or require corneal transplant.
We have then expanded our vision to include adult patients as well. To this end, the Foundation has launched a project to provide support to leukemia patients, especially to those unfortunate enough to slip through the national healthcare system.
Lim 00, who was suffering from adult leukemia, was selected as the twenty-eighth candidate for the Foundation's project.
We are now pleased to announce that Lim 00 has made a swift recovery and has returned to him family. We hope for him speedy return to society as well.
In the future, the Foundation will continue to support patients with leukemia and corneal transplant required in cooperation with hospitals affiliated with the Catholic Medical Center.
Through our efforts, we hope to not only help the needy but inspire others to do the same.

2002 한일 월드컵에서 한국 축구 국가대표팀을 이끌었던 거스 히딩크 감독(75·네덜란드)이 병마를 이기지 못하고 세상을 떠난 제자 유상철 전 인천 감독에게 추모의 메시지를 남겼다. 췌장암으로 투병 중이던 유 전 감독은 7일 별세했다. 향년 50세.
네덜란드에 머물고 있는 히딩크 감독은 국내 히딩크재단을 통해 유 전 감독과 유족들에게 추모의 메시지를 전달했다. 히딩크재단 관계자는 9일 본보와의 통화에서 “유 전 감독이 세상을 떠났다는 소식을 전하자 히딩크 감독이 너무나 슬퍼했다”면서 “한국을 방문하는 것이 어려운 상황이기 때문에 재단을 통해 메시지를 전했다”고 말했다.
추모 메시지에서 히딩크 감독은 “오늘 당신을 잃은 것만큼 슬픈 일은 없다. 당신이 세상을 떠났다는 말을 들어 너무 슬프다”고 말했다. 그러면서 “나는 당신과 같은 위대한 인격을 가진 선수와 함께 할 수 있는 특권을 누렸다. (월드컵에서) 당신은 나와 우리 팀(한국 축구대표팀)에 큰 영감을 줬다”고 말했다. 미드필더와 공격수, 수비수를 모두 소화할 수 있는 ‘멀티 플레이어’였던 유 전 감독은 한일월드컵에서 왕성한 활동량을 바탕으로 그라운드를 누비며 한국의 4강을 이끌었다.
히딩크 감독은 “이제 당신은 우리 곁을 떠나지만, 우리가 함께 나눈 기억은 영원히 공유될 것이다. 당신의 미소와 기쁨도 우리의 마음에 영원히 남을 것이다. 사랑한다”라고 덧붙였다. 히딩크재단은 히딩크 감독의 추모 메시지를 카드에 담아 8일 유족들에게 전달했다.
히딩크재단 관계자에 따르면 히딩크 감독은 유 전 감독의 췌장암 투병 소식을 처음 접한 2019년 11월에도 격려의 메시지를 전했다. 재단 관계자는 “당시 히딩크 감독이 직접 유 전 감독과 통화하기를 원했는데 유 전 감독이 병원에 입원해 치료를 받고 있어서 무산됐다”면서 “대신 격려 문자 메시지를 보내와 재단 관계자가 대신 전달했고, 유 전 감독은 ‘직접 통화를 하지 못해 죄송합니다. 격려의 말씀 감사합니다. 꼭 다시 일어나겠습니다’라는 답장을 했다”고 전했다.

유상철 전 인천 유나이티드 감독이 2002 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 월드컵 4강 진출 20주년을 1년 앞두고 세상을 떠났다. 10주년 기념행사 당시 한국을 찾은 거스 히딩크(75·네덜란드) 감독이 옛 제자를 “참 말을 안 들었던 선수”라는 반어법으로 극찬한 발언이 다시 화제가 되고 있다.
2012년 히딩크 감독은 한일월드컵 개막 10주년인 5월31일에 맞춰 시각장애인 전용 축구장 드림필드 개장식을 위해 방한했다. 옛 스승을 맞이한 유상철 당시 대전 시티즌 감독이 참석한 자리에서 “가장 말을 듣지 않는 선수였다”는 말로 좌중을 당황하게 했지만, 그것은 칭찬이었다.
히딩크 감독은 “2001 FIFA 컨페더레이션스컵 A조 2라운드 전반전 유상철 코뼈 골절을 알아챘다. 교체시키려 했지만 ‘벤치로 쫓아내지 말라’며 지시를 끝까지 어겼다. 그러더니 후반 골을 넣더라”며 11년 전을 회상했다.
2001 컨페더레이션스컵은 2002 한일월드컵 준비를 위한 테스트 이벤트로 열렸다. 그러나 한국은 A조 1차전 프랑스에 0-5로 대패하며 개최국 체면을 단단히 구겼다.
멕시코와 컨페더레이션스컵 2차전은 한국의 자존심이 걸린 경기였다. 유상철은 코로 숨을 제대로 쉴 수 없고 얼굴 전체로 골절 통증이 퍼지는 악조건에도 풀타임을 뛰었을 뿐 아니라 후반 45분 결승골로 2-1 승리를 이끌었다.
코뼈가 부러졌음에도 심지어 헤딩으로 넣은 득점이었다. 히딩크 감독은 “(한국대표팀 사령탑 시절 내 말을 듣지 않아) 제일 나쁜 선수였지만 가장 기억에 남는 제자이기도 하다”며 유상철을 극찬했다.
9년 전 히딩크 감독은 “지금은 그때 부러진 뼈가 제대로 붙었는지 다시 미남이 됐다”는 농담으로 유상철에 대한 애정을 표현했다. 그러나 제자는 “한일월드컵 20주년에 다시 뭉치자”는 약속을 지키지 못하고 말았다.

히딩크 감독은 췌장암 투병 끝에 세상을 떠난 유 전 감독의 소식을 접한 후, 8일 조선일보를 통해 "위대한 선수가 떠났다(Great character passed away)"며 "유상철은 불굴의 투지를 보여준 위대한 축구 선수였고, 세계 축구 팬들에게 감동을 준 선수였다. 그를 기억하고 영원히 추억하겠다"고 전했다.
유 전 감독은 히딩크 감독 체제 국가대표팀에서 핵심 미드필더로 활약하며 큰 신임을 받았다.
특히 2002년 6월4일 부산아시아드경기장에서 열린 폴란드와의 한일월드컵 조별리그 첫 경기에서 2-0 승리를 결정짓는 쐐기골을 터뜨렸다. 월드컵 사상 첫 승을 이끈 값진 골로 유 전 감독의 인생 장면으로 꼽힌다.
한편, 투병 끝에 지난 7일 세상을 떠난 유 전 감독의 장례가 9일 오전 서울아산병원 장례식장에서 축구인장으로 치러졌다. 유가족의 뜻에 따라 발인 등 모든 장례 절차는 가족과 일부 관계자만 참석한 가운데 비공개로 진행됐다.

Yoo Sang-Chul, who starred for South Korea during their run to the World Cup semi-final in 2002, has tragically passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The former midfielder, who made FIFA’s All-Star team of the tournament when his country co-hosted 19 years ago, was only 49.
The Korean FA confirmed his passing on Monday, following an 18 month battle with the disease, declaring: “We will forever remember the shouts and glory of the day with you.”
Sang-Chul made 124 appearances for his national side, and was a mainstay of the side that shocked the world under Guus Hiddink.
He would scored in the group stage game against Poland, and impressed as the co-hosts dumped Italy and Spain out of the competition.
The Asian side would eventually lose in the semi-final to runners-up Germany.
He had previously also featured at France '98, where he scored against Belgium.
He spent his entire 16-year club career in Asia, spending time in both Japan's J-League and his home nation.

네덜란드 일간지 텔레흐라프 등 현지 언론은 15일(한국 시각) 히딩크 감독이 코로나 확진 판정을 받고 회복 중이라고 전했다. 히딩크 감독은 카리브해 남부에 있는 네덜란드령 섬 국가 퀴라소의 국가대표 축구팀 감독을 맡고 있다.
퀴라소축구협회는 15일 공식 페이스북에 이 같은 사실을 알리며 “패트릭 클루이베르트가 임시 감독으로 팀을 이끌 것”이라고 전했다. 현지 언론에 따르면 히딩크 감독은 다음 달 열리는 2022년 카타르 월드컵 지역예선에서 팀을 지휘할 수 없게 되자 직접 클루이베르트에게 팀을 맡아달라고 부탁한 것으로 알려졌다. 바르셀로나 구단도 이를 승낙한 것으로 전해졌다.
패트릭 클루이베르트(45)는 현재 FC바르셀로나(스페인) 유소년팀 총괄을 맡고 있다. 2015~2016년엔 퀴라소 국가대표팀 코치를 맡았었다.
히딩크 감독은 70대 중반의 고령에도 지난해 8월 퀴라소 축구대표팀 감독직과 기술위원장을 맡았다. 2022년 열리는 카타르 월드컵 본선 진출이 목표다.
퀴라소는 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 랭킹 76위로 카타르 월드컵 북중미-카리브해 1차 예선 C조에서 2연승을 거둬 선두로 올라서며 현재 2차 예선 진출을 노리고 있다.
퀴라소축구협회는 이날 “히딩크 감독의 빠른 쾌유를 바란다”며 “클루이베르트가 기꺼이 팀을 맡아준 것에 감사를 표한다”고 밝혔다.
